Imagine for a moment that you’re in a dream. In that dream you see yourself alone, isolated and in a state of absolute fear. It grips you, and you are horrified. You don’t know you’re dreaming but instead experience what is happening as a bone-chillingly deep essence of real terror. And then suddenly you wake up and your sense of relief is total.

If you can grasp that pretense, then you can identify with what this book is about. The events that are occurring in our world today are terrifying and sweeping across the globe with frightening speed. In a certain sense, we are trapped in a nightmare of our own making and we need to wake up.

The design on the cover of this book captures the relationship between our self-imposed prison, escape and echoes the message of a 13th century Christian Mystic by the name of Meister Eckhart. He said the following:

“If you seek the kernel, then you must break the shell. And likewise, if you would know the reality of Nature, you must destroy the appearance, and the farther you go beyond the appearance, the nearer you will be to the essence.”

This redesign of the IMDB movie information page restructures content and relevant media in an intuitive and easy-to-use way, after examining user behavior. Instead of building a text-reliant profile on the movie and its related content, the hierarchy of elements is now based on user preference and level of interest. The flow of information architecture is established from the culturally engrained left-to-right reading pattern with a responsive grid design.

The integrated Movie DNA feature tags, categorizes, and suggests films by similar psychographic and stylistic characteristics rather than by the broad genres traditionally used.

The GUI includes a set of Boolean switches for selecting content and a graphic implementation of the movie's Metacritic rating. Media elements are expandable into lightboxes for intuitive navigation.

Advertising from third-party film services is incorporated inline to prevent the information overload of visually competing content and ads.

The lightboxes, navigation menu, and login prompt all cause page content to lighten and blur via webkit manipulators to visually signal focus. This creates an emphasis and contrast that reflects actual human optic behavior.

The term "bright green", first coined in 2003 by writer Alex Steffen, refers to the fast-growing new wing of environmentalism, distinct from traditional forms. Bright green environmentalism aims to provide prosperity in an ecologically sustainable way through the use of new technologies and improved design.

This conference presents some of the most prominent leaders in bright green environmentalism. We believe that the convergence of technological change and social innovation provies the most successful path to sustainable development.

Visual communications design for this event encompassed social connections research, identity design, event planning, and the development of a user iPad application. The keynote speakers for the event were chosen based on lists of variables that were visually mapped in an infographic-style chart in order to determine their common personal and professional qualities. This visual research made the design process for development of the conference possible.

Led by filmmaker Robert Vail and choreographer Matthew Flatley, The YoMoCo strives to blend the artistic spheres of movement, film, fashion, creative writing, original music and photography to produce innovative and original works. The company was founded in 2010 out of the need to merge dance with other artistic elements to produce more dynamic, multifaceted art. The collective is comprised of artists that have a passion for their art and an urge to experience other original perspectives.

Art direction for the Youth Movement Collective involved developing an authentic way to display the company's name. This brand construct took into consideration the postmodern, minimalistic visual language of the dancers and video production.

The first of a series of newsprint flyers was produced, detailing the work and members in an appealing printed format.

The personal identities for members' cards each feature a unique, hand-painted Rorschach image, representing the movements of the dancer's bodies, the openly interpretive nature of their choreography, and the physical and interpersonal closeness of the group. The reverse displays the company identity and contact information. This identity is extendable and is also used on posters and mailer packaging.
